City to undertake major upgrades at Mfuleni Public Transport Interchange

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate is calling on
residents from Mfuleni to comment on the proposed plans to upgrade the Mfuleni
Public Transport Interchange (PTI). The upgrade includes improvements to the
minibus-taxi infrastructure, a new administration building, new ablution
facilities and the upgrade of the Mfuleni Main Street to improve traffic flow.
The public have until 31 May 2023 to submit their comments.
The City is hosting an information session at the Chris Hani Hall in Ulunthu Street in Mfuleni from 15:00 to 18:00 today, 4 May 2023, to share more information about the proposed upgrade project.
Residents and interested parties are encouraged to attend the session where City officials will answer any questions they may have about the proposed design for the Mfuleni PTI.
The Mfuleni Public Transport Interchange (PTI) is located along Main Street and Lukhanyo Street. Approximately 1 000 daily minibus-taxi trips operate from there, serving over 16 000 commuters on weekdays.
'The proposed design for the upgrade to the Mfuleni PTI is now available for comment and I encourage all commuters and operators from Mfuleni to attend the information day later today where officials will be available to explain what this upgrade will entail. This facility is for the Mfuleni community, and so we would like residents to provide their input before the end of the month for the City's consideration. We intend to add more capacity with the new design, and in so doing, we will cater for the increase in the demand for mini-bus taxi services in the area. This project will increase the PTI's capacity significantly: an additional 144 mini-bus taxi trips will be accommodated in peak periods,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.
The construction is to commence by December 2024 if all goes as planned, and will take about 18 months to complete.
The following improvements are proposed:
- Improved entry and exit for mini-bus taxis
- Improved and safer pedestrian access to the mini-bus taxi facility
- Increased number of loading aisles including a bypass lane
- A roof structure to cover the loading area
- New ablution facilities
- Holding area formalised and expanded
- A brand new administration building which will include a staircase with a viewing platform for increased surveillance and monitoring; and a concrete terrace for outdoor gatherings.
Mfuleni Main Street will be upgraded to improve traffic flow around the PTI. This will include works to increase the size of the roundabout to reduce congestion at the exit of the taxi rank; and the upgrading of the Main Street and Church Street intersection to reduce congestion and queues along Main Street towards the east.
Formal pedestrian crossings will be added as well.
'This facility is currently operating beyond its capacity. The project seeks to improve commuters' daily experience, and make it easier for operators operating from the facility. The new admin building and ablution facilities will allow for a more orderly and well-run operation overall,' said Councillor Quintas.
